Breaking The Rules: Writing Absurd Sketch Comedy

Disco Horses is offering a sketch comedy writing class that dives into their methods of writing absurdist sketch that revolves around the tenants of breaking, bending, and playing with the rules of sketch comedy.

In this class you will learn how to take the basic fundamentals of sketch and play with them to create scenes, characters, and sketches that feel fun, new, and interesting. All developed in your taste and comedic style, these sketches are driven by Disco Horses’ primary principle of “there is always funny in everything, your job is to find it”. The only rule to maintain is being intentional with your choices.

The course will revolve around two primary points of rule-breaking; creative challenges and creative solutions, and messing with the mechanics of sketch. The class will be split into two portions. The first of which Joe and Eric will dive into the points of sketch writing and rule breaking, and the second part will be active, where they will ask participants to bring in 3 premises, or early ideas, that excite them and use the discussed points to actualize those ideas.

It is recommended that you have a bit of sketch experience (classes, performances, writing alone in your basement) before you take this workshop, however it is not required, as the tenants Joe and Eric discuss can be drafted onto any creative pursuit.

It is paramount to Disco Horses that you follow your voice and create work that is your own by finding what makes you laugh. If it makes you laugh, it will make someone else laugh.

If you are interested in learning a new take on sketch writing and creation that is centered in the idea of creative freedom and rule breaking, this workshop is meant for you. If you want to stare at two lil goofy guys for an hour and 30 minutes, this workshop is also meant for you. If you want to learn the ability to sword fight to take on your dad who is a villainous tyrannical king of the land, this workshop might not be for you, but sketch writing MAY help you in those pursuits.
