Available Cupholders Workshops

Austin’s Available Cupholders (Jeremy Sweetlamb, Ace Manning, Bill Stern, Kaci Beeler & Michael Joplin) will be in town on Saturday, October 22nd to lead SIX workshops!

Workshops are $50 each.

What’s Game Got to do With It? w/Ace & Jeremy – 9:30-11:30am
Whether you started out in shortform, or never had the chance to dig in, we will go there and rediscover the joy. We’ll revisit old structures and give you a roadmap for developing/evolving new ones. This workshop is designed to demonstrate the fundamentals of improv and remind us all about the foundational ideas that drew us to it in the first place.

Acting Chops w/Michael – 9:30-11:30am
Every great actor improvises, but the reverse is not always true. In this two-hour workshop, we will borrow techniques and exercises from the scripted acting world and smash them together with improv structures from the work of Keith Johnstone and others. We might use Meisner’s Repetition, Boal’s Great Game of Power, or a Cupholder original: improvising with scripts. You’ll come away a better listener, capable of holding a heavier stage presence, with a better understanding of what is happening in those fleeting moments between you and your scene partner.

Improv for Bad*sses: A Workshop for Women/Femme, Trans, Genderqueer, and Nonbinary+ Folks w/Kaci – 2:10-4:10pm
In this 2-hour workshop, Kaci Beeler (she/they) of the Available Cupholders offers up this time as an affinity space to play with like-minded folks who might otherwise not have space to be themselves in the cis-male-dominated artform that is improv comedy. Exercises will focus on finding the fun, letting loose, supporting each other, and embracing our inner weirdos who can’t wait to come out and play.

Write Your Best Sketch (through prov) w/Bill & Jeremy – 2:10-4:10pm
Two sketchy veterans will lead the class through several structures designed to make you love sketch and love the process of finding the funniest sketches through improv. We will also talk about free brainstorming and quick ways to kickstart your inspiration.

How to be Unstoppable w/Ace & Kaci – 4:30-6:30pm
Have you ever blanked out on stage when you were improvising? Lost your joy? Felt the pressure to be funny and unique? Blamed yourself or maybe even your scene partners?
Kaci and Ace are here to bring some sparkle back to your improv. When you connect with your scene partners and with your higher self using “Deep Yes And”, you become truly unstoppable on the improv stage. We’ll use this fast-paced 2-hour workshop to touch on some of our favorite exercises for creating powerhouse groups and ensembles as well as highly watchable, engaging performers who have a BLAST when they improvise.

Anatomy of Story w/Bill & Michael – 4:30-6:30pm
Over your years of being alive, you have taken in thousands of stories. It is in our biology and our culture to consume, create, and learn from our narratives. This workshop is about unlocking latent story muscles in your improv brain that you don’t even know you have. We’ll run through some games and structures designed to tease that out and get to the heart of your stories. Check out ‘Impro for Storytellers’ by Keith Johnstone for your fall reading assignment!
